The Texas Local Government Code recognizes municipalities incorporated as "cities," "towns, "villages", or "municipalities."

General Law municipalities may operate under the aldermanic, the commission, or the city manager form of government. Municipalities which operate under "General Law" are governed by Title 2, Subtitle B of the Local Government Code. "Home Rule" municipalities, on the other hand, are governed by their own charters.
